Shawn Garrison was born in Russellville, Arkansas in 1986. As a young child, Shawn loved art and drawing, using it as a way to bring his imagination to life on paper.
As a teenager, Shawn dropped out of high school and began working off and on in construction and masonry for nearly six years. Having had a few near death experiences, Shawn felt it was time to get his life together and do what he loved most and made him happiest. When he turned 23 he quit construction and worked a few dead end jobs to save enough money for a tattoo apprenticeship, wanting to do something with his art. Shawn had tried his hand at tattooing in the past but felt unready to take it on as a serious career.
When Shawn was 24, he met his wife, Justine, who was very motivating and supportive of Shawn’s goals to become a tattooer. A year later he was a licensed tattoo artist. “It wasn’t the easiest thing to get my license,” says Shawn. “It took major dedication to driving 2 hours away, five days a week for my apprenticeship, on top of drawing every day and having to work extra hard to make money to stay afloat. There are a lot of artists that can relate to this struggle. All in all, it has been a great journey being a part of the tattoo industry. You meet people from all walks of life and hear all sorts of stories; some good, some bad. But I’m so thankful to be a part of it.”
Aside from tattooing, Shawn is a loving and dedicated family man. He and his wife Justine were blessed with a son in 2014. In 2015, the Garrisons relocated to central Arkansas. Shawn was blessed to find and become a part of the Black Cobra Tattoo family.
“I’ve tattooed for five and a half years and worked at many different shops in Arkansas. I am so grateful to be a part of the Black Cobra crew, and being not only inspired, but humbled by my fellow artists on a daily basis. I love what I do and seeing clients’ reactions and hearing feedback on a piece I’ve put my all into for them. Mostly, I love when clients let me do my thing with the subject matter they provide. I like tattooing styles from neo-traditional and ornamental designs to new school and realism. I give my all to this life and wouldn’t change a thing, this is my passion!”
